Remembering site changes

If you’re on a pump you know the struggle. The manufacturer advices you to change your site after 3 days. Sure, you can leave it in longer but you’re risking your health in the progress. I personally change it every 3 days, but how do I remember that? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wondered did I change my site 2 days ago? or 3? or even 4? My solution: a planner. Everyone that knows me a little better knows about my love for planners. In the midst of May 2015 I discovered the Erin Condern Lifeplanner and let’s just say it was like a whole new world was opened to me. I love colors, I love stickers and as soon as I found out about all the stickers that you can purchase to personalize your life planner I was sold.

I use my planner to organize my life (I mean it’s a life planner after all :)). One aspect of my life is my diabetes and I mark my site changes in my planner. How you ask? Stickers, Stickers, Stickers. I have different options which I purchased off etsy. Let me show you my favorites and how I use them.

These syringes are from a shop called marebarecrafts. I have them in plain red and in a variety of colours. Those are the ones I use the most. I put them down on the days when I change my site. Most of the time I plan my weeks on sundays and I put all the stickers for the week down. If for some reason I have to change a site unexpectedly during the week I can just move the stickers around.

If I do it with the syringes it looks something like this:

I had to blur out private information. That was also a week during my vacation, normally they are much fuller.

If I use full kits I sometimes use the littles stripes with the hearts/asteriks and write “katheter“ (german word for site) on them. Or I stick a syringe on that sticker. Those will look like this in my planner:

Every since doings this, I don’t have a problem with remembering to change a site because I look at my planner on a daily basis. Don’t have a life planner? No problem. I’m sure you have some kind of planner at home. Whether it’s a desk planner, a hanging planner or a personal planner. Grab some stickers (you can get little dots at any office supply store for really cheap) and stick them on there. Or mark the days with a pen. It’s one less thing you have to remember if you’ve somehow “written“ it down.
